About the Event

On March 30th, the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments in Catholic Charities Bureau v. Wisconsin Labor & Industry Review Commission, which emanates from the Wisconsin Supreme Court’s decision holding that Catholic Charities’ entities in northern Wisconsin did not qualify for a religious tax exemption because their activities were not “operated primarily for religious purposes.” In a lengthy dissent, Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Rebecaa Grassl Bradley described the majority’s ruling as forcing courts into the “constitutionally tenuous position of second-guessing the religious significance and character of a nonprofit’s actions.”

 

The featured speaker will be Amanda Salz, an attorney with The Beckett Fund for Religious Liberty which is representing the Catholic Charities Bureau at the United States Supreme Court.
